When Will White People Stop Making Movies Like "Avatar"?

This is another review of Avatar that's been making the rounds and I thought it'd be great to post here, it's from io9, there are good pics and links on the original post, but i though i'd c&p the whole thing anyway:

By Annalee Newitz

Critics have called alien epic Avatar a version of Dances With Wolves because it's about a white guy going native and becoming a great leader. But Avatar is just the latest scifi rehash of an old white guilt fantasy. Spoilers...

Whether Avatar is racist is a matter for debate. Regardless of where you come down on that question, it's undeniable that the film - like alien apartheid flick District 9, released earlier this year - is emphatically a fantasy about race. Specifically, it's a fantasy about race told from the point of view of white people. Avatar and scifi films like it give us the opportunity to answer the question: What do white people fantasize about when they fantasize about racial identity?

A rather sad development this holiday season

Black Jesus nativity scene in Verona, Italy angers 'White Christmas' Northern League party

BY NEIL NAGRAJ
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

A handful of bigots literally dreaming of a "White Christmas" are kicking up a row over a nativity scene that depicts a dark-skinned Jesus, Mary and Joseph.

I'm inclined to agree with Mr. Schinaia, that "History teaches us that baby Jesus and his parents were very probably dark-skinned," Schinaia told Reuters. "This nativity belongs to a universal Christmas tradition that brings together the whole of Christianity in celebration."

Golden-age Batman

I checked out Batman Chronicles vols 1 and 2 from the library. FYI, the Chronicles series is DC's mission to publish every early story in chronological order, in an affordable format.

I support such a mission.

But holy Jesus, early Batman stories are baaaaad. I give props to Bob Kane and Bill Finger for creating the character... but the bad grammar, simpleton dialogue, and ton-of-bricks explanations make it tough to stay focused. Comics sure have evolved quite a bit in the last 70 years...

Still, I'm enjoying myself if only because it's cool to see how far the character has come. I think books like Year One and The Killing Joke are worthy of placement alongside Hemingway, Tolkien, or Douglas Adams. It's all about lending depth and layers to characters... and Batman's characters are layered like a Kit Kat bar.

Detective Comics #27, which featured the first appearance of The Bat-Man in 1937, is ROUGH. The artwork has some dated oomph to it, but the characters and plot are thinner than a rice paper g-string. Each caption tells you way more than you need to know, to the point that you feel like the writer is saying "Hey dummy, Batman's rope is made out of silk... you know, his silk rope... that he attaches to buildings... that silk rope..." If you're not being beaten over the head with the rope explanation, the writer is explaining that the choking gas capsules make criminals choke when Batman throws them at them. To choke them.

Did you get that part? The choking gas capsules cause people to choke. The silk rope is a rope made of silk for swinging from things.

Bat-Man is pretty damn murderous too.

Modern day Batman tries to avoid taking lives whenever possible. He never takes a gun with him.

Every issue, golden age Bat-Man breaks some thug's neck or is throwing some guy in a vat of acid. In one issue, he whips out a gun! And he's so nonchalant about it. Dude shrugs, says "he got what was coming to him," and scampers off.

On top of that, Bat-murderer is a daffy S.O.B. He drives a brown sedan, but flies a Bat-gyrocopter all over town. And he's always at Commissioner Gordon's house, smoking a pipe and chatting about crimes.

At some point, I think I may buy a volume or two, just for kicks.

Blasphemous or not, golden age Batman is kinda crappy *grin*

Brittany Murphy — The Lesser Known Movies

So, writing about a movie star when they die isn’t exactly my thing, but Brittany Murphy dying got to me. And I wouldn’t write about it at all except that through random trolling for movies with Melissa, I saw a few of her lesser known movies that were interesting. To wit:

Sidewalks of New York was Ed Burns’ auteur turn as the post-milleneal answer to Woody Allen. Watchable but not fantastic. Murphy is decent and better than just watchable. She has a face that’s like a CNN crawl of her thoughts, and she’s a good enough actress that her thoughts when in front of the camera are what her character would be thinking.

In Ramen Girl, she plays an American girl stranded in Japan, who, for reasons not readily apparent to me, decides she must learn to become a Ramen Master. This was, I think, a movie originally for Japanese audiences (with Brittany’s English in subtitles) that got language-inverted and sent straight to DVD. She seems a little too gobsmacked and weepy in this movie, but she did her best to make an actual character out of a dishrag of a caricature. This reminded me of Tampopo, which had its basis in the same Japanese in-joke: Americans take at face value the reverence for ramen in the movie, but to a Japanese audience this is ridiculous — Ramen is fast food, and becoming a Ramen master is a little like becoming a French Fry master at Burger King.

The Dead Girl in which she plays the title role, is a movie that tells the story of a murder as the story of the people around the event. Murphy is only in the last segment, detailing her last day as a prostitute trying to deliver her child a birthday present, and of these three movies, this one is the best performance.

I’m sure in coming days we’ll find out all sorts of tawdry details of how she died, her less salubrious proclivities, her schlubby husband, etc. But for now I think it’s worth reflecting on her work, which on the whole was really good. A lot of mention has also been made of her voice work; her Luanne on “King of the Hill” was peerless. And if you peruse her filmography there is ample evidence (she worked A LOT) that she was without fear when choosing roles — she’d try anything once.

It’s been 10 days since I posted here! That ain’t right.
I’ve mostly just been busy at work and then busy getting ready for Christmas. I was getting ready to do some work just now, since our office luncheon ate up most of the day, but then I looked and saw that it was almost 4:30 [...]

With Christmas rapidly approaching, everyone is gonna be taking off work and chilling out with the family for a bit. Our man in Belgium, Red D of We Play House Recordings, has gifted all of us with a special treat to help warm up for the holidays.
